Revolving Food Drive

We currently have AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, Margie Michaels, assisting with improvements to our organization. Margie is accomplishing this through Capacity Building by way of fundraising, food drives, and volunteer efforts. By creating and updating policies and procedures and helping build coalitions Margie is helping to improve the way WGAP’s Food Banks and Gleaning groups get emergency food out to our communities.

Margie is currently working on a project called the Revolving Canned Food Drive. She was inspired by speaking with a food bank coordinator who expressed a need for food drives all year long.  Margie contacted Bicoastal Media in Hood River who broadcast five radio stations in the Columbia River Gorge. They agreed to do ongoing Public Service Announcements of a ‘Revolving Food Barrel’ location. This location changes monthly, and will continue for at least the next 12 months, and is currently in its first month of broadcasting. In the first three weeks, the barrel has brought in over 200 pounds of food for the food bank! A second broadcasting company, Haystack Broadcasting in The Dalles, has just agreed to do a Revolving Canned Food Drive with its three radio stations in the Goldendale area as well. They want to kick off that campaign with a live remote at the Goldendale Food Bank, with the beginning date to be determined.
